Although the jail is more full and the district court handled more
murder cases in 2008 than in most years, Garden City Police and Finney
County Sheriff Kevin Bascue said crime in the city and county is down.
The crime patterns may be different than years past, and Garden City
police Sgt. Michael Reagle reports that going into December, crime in
the city was down 6 percent.
The city saw two murders this year, a higher number in a city that has a 1.3 murders per year average for the last 10 years.
Reagle said other crime patterns have been different in 2009.
"We have seen an increase in aggravated robberies and consensual sex crimes involving juveniles," Reagle said.
Reagle commends members of the public for their cooperation in 2009 and for providing more tips that have led to arrests.
In the county Bascue said in 2008, the office handled 835 criminal
reports and in 2009, as of Dec. 23, the office has handled 732 reports.
Many crimes, Bascue said, were attributed to those involved in gang
activity. With budget cuts crippling the sheriff's office and causing
hiring freezes, Bascue has lost three out of four member of the county
gang unit.
Bascue said burglary crimes were up in 2009, with 95 reports, and 65 in
2008. He said the office handled a few more rape cases and that
vandalism and domestic abuse were about in the same this year as 2008.
