City should make most of tourney opportunities.

Some of the state's better young golfers showcased their skills Monday in Garden City.

State tournaments for high school girls from Kansas schools in classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 6A took place here, with a number of local golf standouts making statements during the competition.

In the 6A competition at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, Garden City High School finished third overall, trailing first-place Topeka-Washburn Rural and Maize in second. GCHS senior Abbi Shaddix finished second in the individual competition.

The Golf Club at Southwind played host to the 3-2-1A event. After a long day on the golf course, Cimarron's Jessica Ast tied Cheney's Brooklyn Lonker for the individual state title, as play was halted due to darkness. In the team competition, Cimarron finished third behind Cheney (first) and Caney Valley.

Along with presenting an ideal opportunity for local golf fans to see young golfers vie for state crowns, the tournament also gave people who came from throughout Kansas a chance to see what the Garden City area has to offer.

The state golf tournaments were just the latest examples of how such events are a natural in the community.

Along with its outstanding golf courses, Garden City boasts a variety of nice playing fields for sports ranging from baseball to soccer, as well as good places for indoor events.

All of the facilities must be kept in top shape for Garden City to remain an attractive destination. Anyone who would doubt the need to invest in any facility should consider how such spending pays off in visits from athletes, their families and other spectators.

People will travel great distances for youth and adult tournaments. Those visitors will spend money with local motels, restaurants and retailers. Folks visiting for the first time also may end up exploring other unique features and attractions in Garden City.

Just like the youth baseball tourneys, boxing tournaments and other sizable sports events that draw a crowd, count the visit from high school girls golf teams and their followers as yet another opportunity for the community to showcase all it has to offer.
