LAKIN -- Bret Alan Tate, 48, Lakin, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, in Coldwater.
He was born Dec. 3, 1959, in Lakin to Brad and Ann Counter Tate. A resident of Lakin for most of his life, he participated in various sports and enjoyed being on the rodeo team at Lakin High School and Colorado State University. He held high school records for calf roping and steer wrestling, and he still holds the steer wrestling record at Lakin High School. He also served as his class president.
After attending Colorado State University for two years, Mr. Tate completed his education at Texas Christian University, graduating with honors from the Range Management program. He returned to Lakin to continue his passion of ranching.
On July 12, 1986, he married Sherry Martin Spencer in Roswell, N.M. For more than 35 years, he worked alongside his father and cousin George Tate, operating Triple "T" Farms and Tate Ranch in Lakin and Syracuse. He also had an interest in the Kearny County Feeders. A few years ago, his family moved the ranching operation to Oklahoma, where he managed Tate Cattle Co. He enjoyed spending time with his children and attending their activities. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and refining antique furniture.
Mr. Tate has been a member of the Lakin Presbyterian Church and the Lakin United Methodist Church. He served on the Lakin Board of Education and was a member of the Lakin Saddle Club, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Kansas Livestock Association and the Oklahoma Livestock Association.
Survivors include his parents; his children, Taylor, Ben and Abby Tate of Grove, Okla; sisters, Tamara Tate Meisel of Lakin and Susan Tate Locklear of Fairview, Texas; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Lakin United Methodist Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Tod Anthony officiating. There will be no visitation.
