Published 3/12/2010 in Obituaries

SYRACUSE — Naomi Jean Elston, 84, a longtime resident of Syracuse, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010.

Born on a farm south of Kendall, to Russell and Florence Hixon Stinchcomb, she was the eldest of 10 children. She attended first grade in Kendall before the family moved to Brandon, Colo., where she played high school basketball. Her senior year, the family moved to Coolidge, where she graduated as valedictorian in 1942. She received a teaching certificate from Hays Teaching College in 1945 and taught briefly in the Bear Creek Township one-room school.

In 1947, she married James Alfred Elston. They maintained a homestead north of Kendall. She enjoyed traveling, taking college classes, attending school and family reunions, taking walks, music, scripture and prayer and admired nature.

Survivors include three sisters, Shirley Osbment of Lamar, Colo., Maxine Coleman of Syracuse, and Sandra Goodwin of Cheney; four children, Marcella Bellinger of Hays, Jim Elston of Syracuse, Janice Jones of Dodge City, and Debra Elston of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Vernon, Bill, Donald, Johnny and Glen; a sister, Betty; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service took place at 8 a.m. MST Feb. 11 in Syracuse, with a fellowship gathering of family and friends at Syracuse Wesleyan Church to share photos and memories of Mrs. Elston. Memorials are to the donor's choice and have included the Gideons and March of Dimes.
