Robert L. Jordan

Robert L. Jordan, 85, of Torrance, Calif., died Friday, July 20, 2008, in Torrance.

He was born Nov. 14, 1922, in a sod house north of Leoti, to Siegel Charles "Joe" Jordan and Mary Jane Smith. He attended third through 12th grade at Garden City, graduating as valedictorian, and attended Fort Hays State University for two years. He joined the Navy V12 program, finished two years at Washburn University in Topeka, earned a medical degree at Wayne University in Detroit, attended Southern California Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and later interned at Baylor in Dallas.

After growing up in Garden City, Mr. Jordan lived in Chicago until serving in the Korean War. He then lived in various cities in California, settling in Palos Verdes, and moved to Albuquerque, N.M., in the early 1970s. A medical doctor specializing in psychiatry, he actively practiced medicine until two years before his death. After becoming a psychiatrist, he was a pioneer in biofeedback and alternative medicine. He was active in the Methodist Church, Phi Beta Kappa and various medical associations, was a Boy Scout and Eagle Scout in his younger days, played French horn in the Garden City High School Orchestra, and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1949 and was recalled during the Korean War.

In 1949, he married Rose Grafa in Dallas. In 1998, he married Helen Alderette.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff Jordan of Torrance, and John Jordan of Fresno, Calif.; two daughters, Sandra Emery of Charlottesville, Va., and Diane Jordan of Torrance; two stepchildren, Jeff and Jennifer Alderette, both of Albuquerque; four sisters, Ellen Gilliam of Pasadena, Calif., Eileen Hughes and Barbara Miller, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bonnie Hassall of Wickenburg, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Martz; a niece, Kathy Weiss; and a stepson, Dean Alderette.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was Sept. 13 at St. Peters by the Sea Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Clayton Cobb officiating.

Memorials are suggested to Boy Scouts of America, 1513 1/2 Fulton Terrace, Garden City, KS 67846.
