LAKIN — Nelle Jane Scheuerman, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

LAKIN — Nelle Jane Scheuerman, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

She was born March 29, 1921, in Stafford to James Henry and Anna May Heimuller Mathias.

She married Leon E. Scheuerman on Aug. 22, 1943, in Deerfield. He preceded her in death.

A resident of Deerfield since 1936, she had worked with AAA in Lakin and then with her husband on the farm.

Scheuerman was a member of the Kearny County Historical Society and served as secretary for 10 years. She was a leader for 15 years with the Prairie View 4-H Club and was a lifetime member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, the Kansas Historical Society and the Finney County Genealogy Society.

Survivors include a brother, Roland Mathias of Garden City; two sisters, Nadine Landon of Deerfield and Shirley Graves of Stanton, Ill.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Rodney and Roger Scheuerman; two brothers; and a sister.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Deerfield United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, and 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Deerfield. Interment will be in the Deerfield Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Emmaus House or to the Finney County Public Library, both in care of the funeral home.
