Walter Gay Smithe, 67, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, in Austin, Texas.

Walter Gay Smithe, 67, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, in Austin, Texas.

He was born Oct. 5, 1942, in Garden City, to Gay and Leva Smithe.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, of Pflugerville, Texas; five children, Kathryn Evans and her husband, Mark, of Pflugerville, Michael Smithe and his wife, Trina, of Hampstead, N.C., John Mark Urrate and his wife, Kelly, of Pflugerville, Kristen Urrate of Pflugerville, and David Urrate of Austin, Texas; eight grandchildren, Karen, Andrew, Alan, Bryan and Mandy Evans, Madison and Mason Smithe, and Jordan Urrate; a sister, Nancy Smithe Grimsley and her husband, Verne, of Oakhurst, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of his life will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Triumphant Love Lutheran Church, 9508 Great Hills Trail in Austin.
