Winona Holzmeister

Winona M. Holzmeister, 97, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at Homestead Health & Rehabilitation Center in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 22, 1912, in Portland, Ore., to Frank and Rose Zimmerman Strohmeier.

A Garden City resident since 2006, moving from Salina, Mrs. Holzmeister was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, both at Garden City and Salina, and Sacred Heart Altar Society of Salina. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, making rugs, reading and watching KU basketball.

On Oct. 7, 1935, she married Thomas Damien Holzmeister in Hays. He died Nov. 10, 1978, in Salina. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Williams; and three stillborn infants.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara McKenna of Garden City, and Beth Commerford of Shawnee; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Vigil and rosary services will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City. Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City, with the Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen presiding. Burial will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Salina, officiated by Ken Dreiling, deacon.

Visitation hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent at www.priceandsons.com. Memorials are suggested to the Winona Holzmeister Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St., Garden City, KS 67846.
