Ernest Hartley

Ernest L. Hartley, 78, a former Garden City resident, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at his home in Ravenna, Neb.

He was born April 26, 1931, in Liberal, to Paul F. and Myrtle E. Ford Hartley. He went to elementary schools in Sand Point, Idaho, Eugene, Ore., and Johnson City, attended high schools in Johnson City and Garden City, and attended Garden City Community College and Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on July 8, 1951, serving during the Korean conflict, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 7, 1953.

On May 9, 1955, he married Patricia J. Brungardt in Garden City. They moved to Ravenna in 1993.

Mr. Hartley was employed for 20 years as a commercial glazier in Kansas and Colorado and was active in all of the communities in which he lived. He was the Finney County Fairgrounds building foreman for three years, was the co-leader of the Lincoln Live Wire 4-H Club and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, all at Garden City. He was a member of the D.A.V. at Montrose, Colo., a current member, past Exalted Ruler and Elk of the Year of Elks Lodge No. 1623 in Gunnison, Colo., past chairman of several committees in the Colorado Elks Association Mountain District and served a term as state trustee (director) of the Colorado State Elks Association. He also was a member of Boelus American Legion Post No. 0201, a past president of St. Michael Road Izaac Walton League and was the charter president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Longmont, Colo.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Colleen Armijo of Fowler, Colo., Dana M. Luft of Ravenna, Sonja Kindall of Grand Island, Neb., and Tricia Hartley of Pompano Beach, Fla.; five sons, Stephen and Patrick Hartley, both of Oklahoma City, and Gary, Mark and Richard Hartley, all of Ravenna; a sister, Peggy Winter of Garden City; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandson, Christopher Walsh; a sister, Pauline Blythe; a brother, Fred Hartley; and a niece, Twila Rothenburger.

Funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna, with the Rev. Marty Egging officiating. Burial will be at Sodtown Cemetery east of Ravenna.

Visitation hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. vigil service, at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Ravenna. Condolences may be sent at www.livson.com. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice, in care of the funeral home, 601 N. Webb Road, Grand Island, NE 68803.
