Irene DeVaney

SYRACUSE — Irene B. DeVaney, 81, died Friday, March 12, 2010, at Seasons Of Life Living Center in Syracuse.

She was born April 3, 1928, in Waverly, to Clarence and Gertrude Edith Harris Brown. She grew up in Pratt, graduating from Pratt Public School in 1946.

On April 5, 1947, she married Carl Richard DeVaney in Pratt. They spent time in Pratt and Greeley County before making their home in Syracuse. A homemaker, she also had many occupations, including working as a cashier at Herndon's Grocery Store, being a clerk at Eddy's Fabric Store and working at the Hamilton County Museum before retiring in August 2004.

Mrs. DeVaney attended the First United Methodist Church of Syracuse and was a member of the Hamilton County Historical Society, Syracuse Women's Bowling Association and Epsilon Sigma Alpha. She enjoyed sewing, bowling, having a flower garden, square dancing, cooking, fishing, camping, doing crafts, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. She also had served as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader.

Her husband died Dec. 27, 1991. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clarence Brown Jr.; and a grandchild; Shadoh Weis.

Survivors include a son, Carl Dennis DeVaney of Syracuse; two daughters, Janet Elaine Weis and Sandy Lee Schroll, both of Syracuse; a brother, Robert Brown of Hutchinson; a sister, Nell F. Heyen of Wichita; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was to begin at 10 a.m. MDT today at the First United Methodist Church in Syracuse. Burial will take place later in Syracuse Cemetery.
