ELKHART — Cynthia L. "Cindy" Gillespie, 58, of Elkhart, died Friday, March 12, 2010, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita.She was born Aug. 20, 1951, in Eads, Colo., to Ellis Eldon and Martha Mildred Lavielle Rutledge. She graduated from Elkhart High School in 1969 and received a registered nurse degree from Seward County Community College in 1991.
A longtime resident of Elkhart, Mrs. Gillespie worked as a nurse for the Morton County Health System as well as Pioneer Manor in Hugoton and Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge and the First United Methodist Church in Elkhart. An avid reader, she also enjoyed sewing and making jewelry.
On Aug. 23, 1969, she married Thomas R. Gillespie Jr. in Ava, Mo. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Thomas Gillespie of Killeen, Texas; two daughters, Rebecca Gillespie of Salida, Colo., and Iris Scruggs of Elkhart; a brother, Charles Rutledge of Wellsville; a sister, Kay VanKampen of Ozark, Mo.; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Thomas Victor Presley Rutledge.
Funeral was to be 10 this morning at the First United Methodist Church in Elkhart, officiated by Bruce Ferguson, pastor. Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested for a nursing scholarship at Seward County Community College in Liberal, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
