Velma L. Lucas, 89, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at Homestead Assisted Living in Garden City.

She was born April 7, 1929, in Dodge City to Eugene and Blanche Rollins Lewis.

She grew up in Dodge City, where she attended school.

On Nov. 14, 1948, she married Wesley Lucas in Dodge City. They moved to rural Satanta. In 2007, they moved to Garden City, where they have lived since.

A homemaker, She was a member of the Garden City Church of the Nazarene, the Sunshine Club, and she taught pre-school Sunday school class for more than 30 years. She enjoyed crafts, cooking and baking, especially holiday treats.

Survivors include her husband, Wesley Lucas of the home; a daughter, Jill (David) Wolfe of St. Peters, Mo.; four brothers, Harold Lewis of Kansas City, Kan., John Lewis of Kansas City, Kan., Richard Lewis of Fort Worth, Texas, and Jim Burr of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Donna Jean League of Arizona, and Clara Mae Beatle of Kansas City, Kan.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Gladys Lewis; two sons, Kirk Lucas and Mark Lucas; and three sisters, Opal Kruse, Eleanor Shaw and Verna Maddan.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Garden City Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
