Norma Jean Caldwell, 82, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, at Albuquerque Uptown Assisted Living in Albuquerque, N.M., after a brief illness.

She was born June 24, 1936, in Dalhart, Texas, to Norman and Caroline Schmidt.

She married Elvin Caldwell on May 16, 1965, in Garden City.

She graduated from Garden City High School in 1958. She graduated from Halstead Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse, and later in 1987 from Garden City Community College with an associate's degree.

She worked for many years as a registered nurse, the director of nursing at Garden Valley Retirement Home and as a licensed nursing home administrator.

She loved baking, especially making delicious breakfast breads and desserts for her family and church. She loved working outdoors, compiling family genealogy, and making things for her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Lasche of Albuquerque, and Janelle Maycumber of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a son, Troy Caldwell of Albuquerque; four sisters, Josephine Schultz of Montezuma, Rose Wedel of Loveland, Colo., Ruby Buller of Halstead, and Virginia Dirks of Durham, Tenn.; two brothers, Earl Schmidt of El Campo, Texas, and Lloyd Schmidt of Ingalls; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Vernon Schmidt and Donald Schmidt.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pierceville Federated Church. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
