Tommy Lou Johnson Austin, 70, of Garden City, died Monday, June 4, 2018, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born May 5, 1948, in Garden City, to John Henry and Vivian Marie King Johnson. She graduated from Garden City High School.
She worked as a dispatcher for St. Catherine Hospital for 23 years. Involved in her community, she served as a past president of the VFW Auxiliary and the African-American Coalition, advocated for Family Crisis, was a Red Cross volunteer and served as a city commissioner. She enjoyed reading, puzzles and finding new ways to help anyone in need.
Survivors include a son, Aaron Lynn (and Carey) Austin of Newton; two brothers, John Johnson Jr. and Bobby Johnson, both of Garden City; a sister, Carol Taylor of Garden City; and a granddaughter, Vivian Opal Austin of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Jason Henri Austin; and two sisters, Virginia Sue Johnson and Toni Ann Johnson.
Funeral will begin at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. In honor of Tommy’s favorite colors, please wear purple or teal colors.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
