DIGHTON — Velma Elizabeth Yost, 91, died Thursday, April 26, 2018, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Scott County to Edgar Karl and Flora Elizabeth (Bockelman) Strickert.
She married Keith Paul Yost on Sept. 21, 1947, at Scott City. He died on July 29, 2003.
She graduated from Dighton High School in 1944. After her husband’s discharge from the military they moved back to the family farm in Lane County.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, Red Hatters & United Methodist Women. In her earlier years, she was a 4-H Leader and a member of As You Like It club. Velma enjoyed playing in her bridge clubs and being a seamstress. She taught all of her children and grandchildren to sew.
She is survived by two daughters, Gayle and Bill Woodward of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Marilyn Yost Wamalwa of Denver and Salituma Wamalwa of Kenya; two sons, Roger and Terri Yost of Dighton, and Arlen and Sharon Yost of Waterloo, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, August Ehmke; husband; two sisters, Hilda Thomason and Margaret Stoppel; and brother, Albert Ehmke.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home.
