Zella May Berry, 86, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born March 20, 1931, in Osawatomie, to Ivan and Zelma (Newer) Elkinton.

She grew up in Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1949. She lived in Salina, before moving to Springfield, Mo. She worked at St. John’s Hospital/Mercy Memorial Hospital from July 1983 to October 2012 as a health information records keeper and as the health information management services associate. She left her work and moved to Garden City to help her sister, Thelma Whetstone, who had a stroke. Zella eventually moved into Homestead Nursing Home in Garden City.

Survivors include two nephews, Phil Whetstone of Nardin, Okla., and Gary Whetstone of Garden City; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Berry, who she was married to for seven years; her parents; and a sister, Thelma Whetstone.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Beagle Cemetery in Beagle.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials be given to the donor’s choice, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846.
