Michael R. Gilbert, 71, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, near Walsenburg, Colo.
He was born Nov. 25, 1945, to Harlan L. and Genevieve R. Lemman Gilbert.
He graduated from Stockton High School in 1965. After graduating from high school, Michael moved to Dighton and later moved to Garden City in 1971 and has lived in Garden City since.
He served in the Army National Guard for 22 years. He also worked for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for more than 20 years. After his retirement, he worked as a truck driver for 10 years for various Garden City trucking companies. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City, a senior member of the Pope & Young Club, the Safari Club of Kansas City, the NRA, and the Sand & Sage Rifle & Pistol Club. He enjoyed hunting with a bow, rifle and shotgun, and was an outfitter for big game.
On June 17, 1972, he married Loretta Marie Matza in Garden City. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Tina Wherrell and husband Steve of Wichita, and Lisa Perkins and husband Steve of Goddard; a brother, Robert Gilbert and wife Edda of Brookville, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Bridget Wherrell, Aidan Wherrell, Aubrey Wherrell and Grant Perkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty L. Gilbert.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City, with military rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guards.
Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
