ULYSSES — Leon Shapland, 94, of Ulysses, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses. 

He was born May 19, 1923, in Lane County, to Oswald Ernest and Mary Elizabeth Miller Shapland. He graduated from Dighton High School in 1942. 

Mr. Shapland farmed in Grant County before moving to Kearny County, where he lived and farmed for 70 years. 

On Dec. 22, 1948, he married Peggy Alene Yohn in Ulysses. She preceded him in death as did his parents; four brothers, Elmer, Claud, Melvin and William Shapland; and two sisters, Carrie Honeyman and Lucy Reed.

Survivors include his children, Connie Dawson of Greensburg, Leland Shapland of Garden City, Debra Crall of Thomas, Okla., and Kevin Shapland of Ulysses; a sister, Helen Jewett of Overland Park; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. 

Funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery.
