Jerry Gates, 75, of Garden City, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. 

He was born June 9, 1942, in Dexter, Mo., to Bartholomew and Annie Smith Gates. He graduated from high school in Dexter. 

A longtime resident of Garden City, Mr. Gates was owner and operator of U-Pump It, Inc. He enjoyed fishing, cars, KU basketball and spending time with his grandchildren.

He married Kathy Brungardt in Wichita. She survives. Other survivors include four children, Tyler (Katie) Gates of Garden City, Tessa Gates of Garden City, Mick (Michelle) McDaniel of Junction City, and Scott (Jen) McDaniel of Lawrence; a sister, Peggy Parker of Tampa, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Kendra Gates, Griffin McDaniel, Madelyn McDaniel, Trae McDaniel and Thane McDaniel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tim McDaniel; and three brothers, Wilburn, Bill and Wayne Gates.

Graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
