Beverly Ann Coates, 66, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Dec. 22, 1950, in Garden City to Raymond “Bud” and Opal Kingston Wishon.

As a child, Beverly moved with her family to Missouri for a short time before they moved back to Finney County. She attended Holcomb schools and graduated from Holcomb High School.

She began working as a secretary and receptionist at the Garden City Co-op. She then worked for many years as a roaming secretary for Garden City USD 457. While with USD 457, she later became a para-professional for  gifted students at Kenneth Henderson Middle School. She also worked as office manager and an assistant to the director of the Adult Learning Center in Garden City.

She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Garden City and enjoyed genealogy, flower gardening, oil painting, fishing and baking with her grandchildren. Her love of genealogy led her to become the author of the Coates Family genealogy book.

On April 17, 1971, she married Dennis Coates in Garden City. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Shelia Gondoly and husband William of Wichita, and Dena Walck and husband Brandon Barr of Deerfield; her mother, Opal Wishon of Garden City; a sister, Diane Crockett and husband Max of Garden City; and eight grandchildren, Kyle Reece, Jayna Reece, Kayla Gondoly, Kason Gondoly, Trevin Walck, Macie Walck, Emelia Barr and Lucie Barr.

She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Fred Wishon; an infant sister, Wilma Wishon; and twin grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Brethren in Garden City. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
