Leo H. Kleysteuber, 96, died Friday, July 28, 2017, at his home in Garden City.

He was born May 16, 1921, in Carlisle, Ill., to Henry and Mary Wedekemper Kleysteuber.

He moved to Finney County with his family when he was a child. He attended high school and graduated from Pierceville High School.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1946, primarily at Ft. Myers as a gunnery instructor.

On Feb. 22, 1944, he married Eldora Ardery in Haskell County. They lived in the Plymell area from 1947 to 1964, then moved into Garden City and have lived here since.

He was a lifetime farmer and stockman in the Plymell area and northern Haskell County. He enjoyed his work, family and going to the lake. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City and Plymell Community Church. He served as a 4-H leader for many years, was a member of the American Legion and the Finney County Historical Society, and as a farmer, was awarded Kansas Young Farmer of the Year. He volunteered at the coffee shop at Garden Valley Retirement Village.

Survivors include his wife, Eldora Kleysteuber of the home; four children, Joan Davis and husband Scott of Westlake, Calif., Jean Strandmark and husband Dick of Garden City, Dean Kleysteuber and wife Jeanne of Garden City; a son-in-law, Mike Bayer of Encinitas, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jill Bayer; two brothers, Harold Kleysteuber and J.R. Kleysteuber; and a sister, Ruth Lightner.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.

The family suggests memorials be given to the First United Methodist Church, the Finney County Historical Society, or Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846.
