Willis Christian

Willis R. Christian, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.

He was born Aug. 21, 1929, on a ranch south of Ulysses, to Will and Nora Blake Christian. He graduated from high school in Moscow in 1947.

He married Betty Ann Jones on May 21, 1948. He started farming, along with grazing cattle, in Grant County. In later years, in addition to farming, he operated an elevator in Moscow, which was a partnership with his parents, built and managed a feed yard, and started Christian Hay LLC and again raised cattle.

Survivors include his companion, Carol Mertes of Liberal; two daughters, Connie Portenier of Iola, and Rhonda Crawford of Liberal; a son, Mike Christian of Hooker, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Cheri Evers of Parachute, Colo.; two stepsons, Jack Hasik and Chris Mertes, both of Liberal; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal. Burial will begin at 3 p.m. at Grant County Cemetery in Ulysses.

Visitation hours are 1 to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal, with the family greeting friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
