Marianne Reed Miller

Marianne Reed Miller, 82, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Aug. 20, 1930, to Tom J. & Mildred E. Mitchell Reed in Garden City.

On Dec. 26, 1947, she married Max R. Miller in Garden City.

A homemaker and farm wife, Mrs. Miller was a member of First United Methodist Church of Garden City. She was a member and served as the first woman president of the Garden City Rotary Club, was an original board member of the Western Kansas Community Foundation, a member of the Garden City Family YMCA, and a member of RSVP, where she volunteered many hours at Benincasa, St. Catherine Hospital Gift Nook, The Garden City Travel Center, Meals on Wheels, and Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo. She also served on the Salvation Army Board of Directors and volunteered as a bell ringer.

She was awarded the Kansas Farm Homemaker of the Year in 1977 and was also the recipient of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce Award of Merit.

Her hobbies were playing bridge, reading, swimming, shopping, and traveling, especially to Walt Disney World.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an aunt, Marie Pickett.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; one daughter, Merrilee and John Thomas, Fountain Hills, Ariz.; five sons, Gerald and Beverly Miller, Marc and Lucinda Miller, Monte and Nancy Miller, Ross and Patricia Miller, Kyle and Dana Miller all of Garden City; one sister-in-law, Shirley and Dr. Don Tillotson, Ulysses; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. A private family committal service will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours.

The family requests memorials given to the Marianne Miller Memorial Fund, to which the family will donate to various organizations in the community. Memorials are in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846. Condolences may be emailed to garnandfh@sbcglobal.net.

Marianne Miller

Our prayers are with the family at this time. I remember working for her when I was in high school. I loved her speghetti and her red cake. I still have that recipe which I use a lot. She will be missed.

Childhood thoughts
