Jessie M. Ortiz, 87, of Garden City, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born June 9, 1925, in Deerfield, to Aniseto and Felipa Martinez Herrera. She grew up in the Deerfield and Holcomb area and attended school there.
On July 27, 1942, she married Tanis M. Ortiz in Garden City. A homemaker, she and her husband were foster parents for more than 20 years.
Her husband died June 22, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John Herrera, Aniseto Herrera Jr. and Ernie Diaz; and a sister, Rose Perez.
Survivors include five sons, Joe Ortiz of Chino, Calif., Marcos Ortiz of Montebello, Calif., Andy Ortiz of Farmington, N.M., and Jerry and Ted Ortiz, both of Garden City; three daughters, Mary Gonzales of Garden City, Rita Mendoza of Victorville, Calif., and Teresa Ortiz of Chino; a brother, Frank Herrera of Los Angeles; three sisters, Trini Enriquez of Garden City, Esther Cartelli of Bell, Calif., and Carmen Robinson of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
