DIGHTON — Hope Jane James, 16, of Dighton, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in Ellis County.

DIGHTON — Hope Jane James, 16, of Dighton, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in Ellis County.

She was born Oct. 29, 1996, in Garden City, to Daniel Edward and Dana Marie Shaffer James.

A sophomore at Dighton High School, Hope was active in her school by participating in band, forensics and golf. She also was involved with the Family Community Career Leaders Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

She enjoyed fishing, shark tooth hunting, rock hunting, fossil hunting and going to church camp. She liked to cook and had entered a pecan pie in the past few Lane County Fairs.

Survivors include her mother, of Dighton; her father, of Dighton; two brothers, Mathew James of Dodge City, and Luke James of Olathe; three sisters, Abby and Bridget James, both of Dodge City, and Dale Marie James of Dighton; and her grandparents, Dorthea James and Deanne Shaffer, both of Dighton, and Robert Shaffer of Texas. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Dale James.

Funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Dighton. Burial will take place at Shields Cemetery in Shields.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton. Condolences may be emailed to garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to the Dighton High School Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home, Box 891, Dighton, KS 67839.
