MARIENTHAL — Edmund George "Cork" Berning, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, following a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born April 16, 1932, in Marienthal, to Anthony John and Hilda Laura Simons Berning. He was a 1950 graduate of Wichita County Community High School.
On Jan. 20, 1958, he married Evelyn Mae Dechant in Garden City. They made their first home on the family homestead in rural Wichita County and later moved to Marienthal. A lifetime farmer and stockman, Mr. Berning was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife, survivors include five children, Steve Berning of Lakin, Carol Berning of Winfield, Karen Stallbaumer of Goddard, Kevin Berning of Marienthal, and Keith Berning of Shawnee; three siblings, Eugene Berning of Leoti, Virginia Knobbe of Marienthal, and JoAnn Jesko of Hereford, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Mary Louise Simon, John Berning and Robert Berning.
Vigil service will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Marienthal, with full military honors conducted.
