What is Newspapers in Education?

Newspaper in Education (NIE) is an educational program associated with the Garden City Telegram

NIE was developed to:

Improve the educational achievement of students
Instill a stronger sense of community among students
Enhance the educational experience of students
Increase community involvement in education

Newspaper in Education (NIE) attempts to achieve these goals by:

Providing sponsored sets of newspapers for classroom use
Offering curriculum support
Increasing the understanding of speicial issues and events
Offering a sponsorship program that encourages community involvement

Why are newspapers used in classrooms?

Newspapers in classrooms deal with reality in what is happening here and now.
Newspapers in the classroom contain practical vocabulary and words that students will use over and over again throughout their lives.
Newspapers in classrooms improve students' reading achievement, retention and comprehension. In one study, reading skills increased by two grade levels for students who use the newspaper, compared to students using traditional methods.
Newspapers in the classroom influence students' attitudes toward reading and improves their competency in reading newspapers.
Newspapers in the classroom influence students' interest in academic subject areas and impove current event and newspaper knowledge.

How does Newspaper in Education (NIE) work?

Businesses, organizations and even individuals can contribute to this effort. Through sponsorship contributions, teachers and students benefit from educational materials offered by the NIE program, such as classroom sets of newspapers, activity guides and other curriculum support, access to a variety of educational programs, opportunity to participate in a variety of contests and receive quarterly newsletter and educational updates.

How can you help?

Through sponsorships, the Garden City Telegram can implement a Newspaper in Education program to reach students in our schools. As a sponsor, you can provide newspapers for students in classrooms each week. If you wish to adopt a particular school or classroom, we can acccomodate you.

How will you benefit as a sponsor?

Throughout the school year, the Garden City Telegram places NIE ads to recognize program sponsors. The Garden City Telegram website will also display sponsors names and logos. Letters are mailed to area school superintendents notifying them of their school's NIE sponsors and their teacher participating in the program. NIE sponsors also receive a certificate of participation for their office.

This is a special sponsorship allowing your business to support local special programs for schools as well as deliver newspapers to classroooms for the entire school year. Your business will receive all other sponsorship benefits.

Junior Sponsorship...

$600 donation

Newspapers delivered to 4 classrooms for the entire school year.

Sophomore Sponsorship...

$450 donation

Newspapers delivered to 3 classrooms for the entire school year.

Freshman Sponsorship...

$300 donation

Newspapers delivered to 2 classrooms for the entire school year.

Apple A Day Sponsorship...

$150 donation

To be partnered with other contributors for newspapers delivered to 1 classroom for the entire school year.
