Holcomb USD 363 Board of Education members on Monday night hired two new principals to the district and held their first meeting with Jean Rush, new superintendent, and three new board members.
Board members Sean Sheets, Scott Knoll and Mike Pfeifer joined current board members Matt Jones, Tim Miller, Gayla Lohfink and Mary Ann Bennet at the regularly scheduled Monday meeting.
The board approved the hiring of Rob Schneeberger, previously the high school principal and athletic director at Kansas City Christian Schools in Prairie Village in Johnson County, as the new Holcomb High School principal. He will be paid a salary of $80,000 and offered a $2,000 reimbursable moving expense and an additional $5,000 if he relocates to Holcomb or a Holcomb housing contract is provided within six months of signing the principal contract.
He will replace Jarrod Stoppel, who resigned and took a position as associate principal and activities director at Abe Hubert Middle School in Garden City.
The board also hired Sandra Schadegg as the Holcomb Elementary School and Wiley Elementary School principal. The board approved the hire for a $69,000 salary, a $2,000 reimbursable moving expense and an additional $5,000 if she relocates to Holcomb or a Holcomb housing contract is provided within six months of signing her principal contract.
Schneeberger had worked at KCC three different times — from 1987 to 1995 as a teacher, coach and athletic director, again from 1997 as a teacher, coach and athletic director, and from 2008 to 2010 as principal and athletic director.
What appealed to Schneeberger about the Holcomb position is the size of the school. He said he enjoys large 3A or small 4A schools because of the size of the student body and the relationships that can be built among staff and between students and teachers.
He said schools that size also have a lot to offer students, as compared to smaller schools.
"It's balanced right there in the middle," he said.
Schneeberger said he's looking forward to joining the community and noticed the Holcomb pride when he visited for the job interview.
"You could really tell that there was a pride in the community at the school for the school. ... The community is proud of its school," he said.
Schneeberger said he plans to visit the area Wednesday to start looking for housing.
He has a wife, Debbie; a married daughter, Bobbie; a son, Brandon, 21, a senior at Emporia State University; and two daughters, Megan, 19, a sophomore at Kansas State University, and Malloy, 17, who is a senior in high school.
Schadegg replaces Michael Estes, who accepted a position as the Halstead-Bentley High School principal and activities director.
Schadegg was the pre-kindergarten through sixth grade principal at USD 459 Bucklin from 2008 to present.
She could not be reached for comment this morning.
In other news, the board voted Tim Miller as school board president and Mary Ann Bennett as vice president.
During Rush's first report as superintendent of Holcomb schools, she said it's great to be in Holcomb.
"I'm excited about the future and potential. I've been nothing but impressed with what I've seen so far," she said.
The board scheduled a budget hearing for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8. The purpose of the budget hearing is to respond to questions from the public concerning the proposed budget for the 2011-12 school year.
In new business, the board also approved the substitute teacher handbook, teacher evaluation process handbook, classified employee handbook, and approved the 2012 elementary, middle school and high school handbooks, with the bullying protocol to include "electronic bullying."
The board approved student accident insurance from K&K Insurance with a low bid of an annual premium of $9,208 with $1,242.80 for catastrophic for a total of $10,450.
The board also approved season pass rates for Holcomb Middle School and the high school. Season pass rates for all sports at the high school are $50 for adults, $35 for students and $100 for families. For the middle school, all sports season passes are $20 for adults, $10 for students and $30 for families.
The board hired Julie Nemecheck as the district software support specialist and accepted the following resignations: Monica Colburn, high school secretary; Misti Becker, high school English teacher; and Donna Lucero, Wiley Elementary School custodian.
The board went into closed session for an hour and a half to discuss personnel, negotiations and employment of staff. No action was taken upon returning to open session.
