Crime prevention event coming up

Published 7/18/2011 in Local News

Neighborhoods throughout Garden City are invited to join forces with thousands of communities around the nation for the 28th annual "National Night Out" crime and drug prevention event, GCPD Sgt. Michael Reagle said today.

This year's event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 2 in Stevens Park and will include activities for children, musical entertainment as well as free food for all, the sergeant said.

In addition to the event at Stevens Park, residents in Garden City and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outside with their neighbors and emergency service personnel in the form of a block party.

Neighborhoods interested in hosting a block party and having emergency personnel attend are asked to call Master Patrol Officer Robert Scrivner at 276-1300.

National Night Out, which is sponsored nationally by Target and the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Garden City Police Department, Garden City Fire Department and the Finney County Sheriff's Department, "bring people together to promote drug prevention awareness, generate support in community policing efforts, strengthen our community and to let criminals know that we are committed to fighting crime in our neighborhoods," Reagle said.

Over 37 million people are expected to participate in 'America's Night Out Against Crime.'
