Free music program set for SaturdayThe Garden City Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers will begin performing at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St.
The monthly program of old-style country music is free to the public. Anyone wishing to perform is welcome to sign in to take a turn in the rotation of musicians and singers.
A carry-in supper will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (bring your favorite covered dish for the meal), followed by more music until 9 p.m.
GCHS to host music clinic Thursday
Garden City High School will host the Tri-M Music Honor Society Elementary Music Clinic at 4 p.m. Thursday for fourth- and fifth-grade students. The high school and elementary students will participate in the clinic beginning at 4 p.m., followed by a concert at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd. Admission to the concert is a donation in any amount to benefit the Shropshire Music Foundation.
The clinician for this event is Liz Shropshire, the founder of the Shropshire Music Foundation. She teaches "peace through music" in music classes in Uganda, Kosovo, and Northern Ireland and.

Appointments to military academy announced
Rep. Tim Huelskamp announced Thursday nominations for military academy appointments from the 1st District, including three from Garden City.
Brevin Irvin, son of Steven and Kathryn Irvin, was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Tyler LaSalle, son of Roger and Jennifer LaSalle, was nominated to the U.S. Military Academy.
Greta Peters, daughter of Timothy and Shawn Peters, was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
A total of 18 young people from the 1st District were nominated, including two from southwest Kansas.
Jacob Gesling, of Sublette, son of Michael and Karen Gesling, was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Military Academy.
James Meehan III, of Dodge City, son of James, Jr., and Cathy Meehan, was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Military Academy.
Members of Congress nominate outstanding young men and women to attend the nation's military academies. The application process is rigorous and requires an applicant to have a history of personal discipline and a commitment to his or her school and community. Huelskamp recruited a board of Kansans to review applicants and make recommendations.
