HOLCOMB -- Holcomb has a new mayor.
Lary Cole, the former mayor, on Wednesday night cited personal reasons for why he resigned his post. As president of the Holcomb City Council, Greg Cox now assumes the position of mayor until the next mayoral election.
Cox announced the change in leadership during the City Council's Wednesday meeting.
Cox said he first heard the news from Cole on Monday. The new mayor added that he has no hesitations about fulfilling the new duties.
"I'm ready to take the baton and run with it," Cox said.
Cole said Wednesday night that he did not wish to elaborate on his reasons for resigning.
"I've got some personal stuff going on right now, and I can't give it the attention it deserves, so I chose to step out of the way," Cole said.
Cole was elected to the council in April 2007 and recently took over the mayor position after former mayor Jamie Jarnagin vacated the position in September because he had moved outside of city limits.
Council members present at Wednesday night's meeting unanimously elected Gary Newman to replace Cox as the new council president, a member of the board who adopts the mayor's duties in his absence.
Council members Rob McCallister and Tracy Davis, in addition to Newman, supported Newman's appointment. Council member Janelle Robins-Gaede was absent.
Cox said the council will be accepting letters on intent to serve on the city board. Residents interested in filling the vacant position can submit their letters to Holcomb's city office, 200 N. Lynch St. The letter must be received by Wednesday, Cox said.
City officials said they planned to appoint a new council member at their next public meeting on Nov. 11.
In other business, the council also took the following action:
* approved the hiring of a new policeman. Joshua Tipton will begin his full-time position on Nov. 7 at a pay-rate of $14 per hour. Tipton, of Tecumseh, Okla., is a member of the National Guard and has been deployed to Iraq, Holcomb Police Chief Clinton Thompson said.
* approved the purchase of six new bunker uniforms for city firefighters, totaling about $10,845, at the request of Fire Chief Chad Eisenbise.
City officials will be hearing presentations in the next month from two Kansas engineering firms that hope to be hired as engineering advisors for the city. The two firms include Earles Engineering, a firm with offices in Salina, Garden City and Liberal, and BHC Rhodes, a firm that operates out of Dodge City, Overland Park, and Kansas City, Kan.
The advisors are needed in the wake of former City Engineer Paul Nixon's retirement, city officials said.

HELP
This city is in desperate need of help. I have to disagree with Naomi, I think think the city has enough staff. The PD does not serve us 24/7, my trash is rarely picked up on a Monday like its suppose to, the grass patches on Railroad looked awful this year and it was because of people like Cox and Cole who are against adding more help. I am all for cost savings when apporiate, but not foolish. Take for example Mrs Davis, she continues to discuss wanting a bus around town. I haven't heard any feedback that is positive. I also appreciate the fact that attention was brought to Holcomb with the Clutter memorial, but I remember reading that Mr Cox wanted to city to pay for benches...that would have been wasteful spending. I think Mr Cox has you fooled and I hope the rest of the people that live here don't fall fot his lies and ignorance.

Thank you
I would like to thank Mr. Cox for his money saving efforts over the past few years. I see so much wasteful spending and overlapping positions in our city government. As a senior citizen on a fixed income I appreciate any help we can get. Also, God bless you for your help with the Clutter memorial. I knew the Clutter family and they were wonderful Christian people.

Will the real James stand up?
James, Greg Cox doesn't seem to be the most arrogant. Look in the mirror! Don't you people realize that politics can't satisfy each and everyone? There are only 2 of you against the change in the city council. You and Ron are the city clowns. It took me awhile to figure out who Geaty was, although that is your own vendetta against her, isn't it? Not be able to spell her name. You can spell comprehensive correctly, but can't spell a name that has been in the community for years correctly? How do you remember the issues so well that the city has dealt with, but you can't even remember one of our teachers' name. If you have such a problem with the city council, then why didn't you run? Or did you? I guess we will find out correctly how to spell your name when you start the petition, because it's not JAMES.

i agree
I agree with what James said. There is something going on and it is not fair to the people who live in Holcomb. Mr Cox is going to pull some stupid stunt and then hopefully he leaves. I know one of the council members personally who only wants to take care of the city, he is always out in the city so he knows what is going on. The new mayor has a personal agenda and its going to put us back where we were before. I know that Rob and Gary have things they want to get done for the city but with these games the rest of the council are playing it is only going to delay these things. Mr Cox is opposed to everything, he has argued about the dumbest things. He should just quit and let the city move forward. I hope the editor follows his stupidity and writes about it.

What
Is this a joke? Larry Cole appoints Geaty who immediately nominates Cox as president then Cole resigns. This sounds like a game and its all becasue Cole is mad at things that happened in the past. Greg Cox has done nothing for this city put make us look like a circus, and now he is the ring leader. This had to have been planned. This city is doing nothing but going backwards. Greg Cox is the most arrogant man in this town, who never lives up to what he says he is going to do. Now he and Geaty are going to completely ruin whatr others tried so hard to build. I hope he follows the trend and resigns to, that way we can have someone in the mayors seat that actaully cares about doing something for the city. Lets all remember that Cox voted against doing the comprehensive plan, he voted against sending someone to DC which paid off this year by cleaning up some of the trucks near the railroad. He votes against the employees getting pay raises. He is going to end up causing us more taxes by not spending money and letting things break down. I think I'll get a petition going against having him as mayor. Come on Holcomb, fight with me.
