Candidate for Lt. governor to visit

Jill Docking, candidate for lieutenant governor, will visit Garden City, Colby and Hays this weekend. Docking is the running mate of Paul Davis, Democratic candidate for governor.

Docking will appear at a campaign event at 5 p.m. today at Alegria Express, 3555 N. Jennie Barker Road in Garden City.

Edith Scheuerman offers literacy activities

Edith Scheuerman Elementary School will hold a Family Literacy Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday.

There will be a variety of fun literacy-based activities, such as crafts, reading, a scavenger hunt, and bingo. A book fair will take place, as well. Prizes will be given and a nacho snack will be provided.

Parents can obtain materials to work on literacy skills with their child at home.

Also, grandparents of Edith Scheuerman Elementary students are invited to attend the "Browse, Bites, and Books" event from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday. Grandparents can shop at the book fair with their grandchildren.

GCHS Hall of Fame deadline approaching

The Garden City High School Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for 2014 Hall of Fame. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. March 7 at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming St.

Nominees must be graduates of Garden City High School. Applicants are chosen based on professional accomplishments, community service and the capacity to be a positive role model.

Nomination forms are available in the main office of Garden City High School, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd.; the Educational Support Center of Garden City Public Schools, 1205 Fleming St.; the Finney County Public Library, 605 E. Walnut St.; the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St., and online at www.gckschools.com under the Online Services section. For a faxed copy of the nomination form, call 805-7000 or 805-5400.

Nominations submitted in 2012 and 2013 will be considered along with this year's nominees. Nominations from years prior to 2012 should be resubmitted.

Two inductees will be selected for the 2014 GCHS Hall of Fame. One is chosen from within Finney County and the other from outside the county.

GCCC offers firearms class

The Garden City Community College Department of Public Safety is offering Women on Target from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 1 and June 7. The class covers handguns, rifles and shotguns, including live fire indstruction and practice on the Sand and Sage range, weather permitting.

Participants will learn to selet, clean and store firearms, understand ammunition, load, unload and fire a gun. Certificates will be awarded to successful participants. Cost, $70.
