Betty Wilson

Betty Jeanne Wilson, aged 94, passed away on April 21, 2014. Betty was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and grandmother, and a friend to many in our community.

Betty was born on Nov. 19, 1919, in Ellis, Kansas. Her parents were Carrie and Joseph Aust. She was the youngest of 11 children.

When Betty was eight years old she moved to Ingalls, and three years later to Garden City, where she would make her home.

Betty attended Garden City Public Schools, graduating from GCHS in 1937 and then attending GCCC. She was a cheerleader during her years at GCHS and GCCC. For eight years she worked at Woolworth's, wearing high heels every day to work.

She married Clyde Wilson, her longtime sweetheart, on July 18, 1945, in Dodge City, Kansas, on the day he returned home from serving during World War II. She and Clyde had three children: Ronnie Wilson, Terry Rome, and Larry Wilson.

Betty loved all children and made a difference in many children's lives through volunteering. She was very active as a room mother in schools, PTA president, Cub Scout leader, Brownie leader, and Girl Scout leader for her children, while they were growing up.

Later in life she enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and spending time with her many grandchildren. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Betty took great pride in the business she started with Terry, "The London Blue," — a part of The Corner on Main. Here, she enjoyed visiting with customers in the store, and she especially enjoyed holding their babies while they shopped.

Funeral services for this lovely lady will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Garnand Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Memorials in honor of Betty will support one of her favorite places in Garden City, Lee Richardson Zoo. She loved strolling through the zoo with her grandchildren, always taking along bread to stop and feed the ducks. Condolences may also be given at

Though her stature was petite, her heart and love for people was enormous. With her contagious laughter and sweet smile, Betty will be missed dearly by everyone whose life she touched.

Arrangements are by Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. 7th St., Garden City, KS 67846.
