College Goal Sunday Feb. 21

Published 2/8/2010 in Roundup Briefs

Southwest Kansas high school seniors and family members from 10 towns converged in Garden City last year for College Goal Sunday, and organizers are expecting even more for the annual event this year, set for 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Garden City High School courtyard.

College Goal Sunday, a nationwide event, offers advice and assistance for students seeking financial assistance to attend college or vocational-technical school.

The free come-and-go event is for high school students and their parents, plus anyone else interested in receiving advice and assistance in completing federal application paperwork, as well as other aspects of attaining funds for college.

There are 20 College Goal Sunday sites in Kansas, including Garden City and Dodge City.

Approximately 30 volunteers will assist this year in explaining federal grants, loans, scholarships and other types of college financial aid, and in helping fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the basis for nearly all university and college financial assistance. Students will also be able to apply for their required federal personal identification numbers.

Volunteers will come from GCCC and local high schools, and some will be able to speak Spanish, as well as English. The day is not designed to direct students to any particular college or university, so the volunteers will be able to help students no matter what college or postsecondary technical school they plan to attend next fall.

At each site, participants also may register for one of four $500 scholarships, which may be used at any accredited postsecondary college, university or technical school.

Those who attend should bring their 2009 federal income tax returns and W-2 forms, whether or not they're completed.

GCCC is one of 20 simultaneous College Goal Sunday locations in 17 Kansas communities.

Additional information is available from the GCCC Student Financial Aid Office, 276-9519 or at www.collegegoal.org. Those planning to attend may text CGS to 25827 for a reminder.
