A Time Line of events related to the murders of the Clutters and conviction and hanging of Perry Smith and Dick Hickock
Saturday, Nov. 14, 1959
- Dick Hickock and Perry Smith leave Olathe in a '49 Chevy, traveling 400 miles to Holcomb.
- At the Clutter home at 9 p.m. Herb Clutter talked by telephone with his business partner Gerald Van Vleet.
- At 10:30 p.m., Bobby Rupp left the Clutter home after watching TV with Nancy.
- Between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday, four members of the Clutter family were murdered.
Sunday, Nov. 15, 1959
- At 9 a.m., two girlfriends of Nancy Clutter discover the bodies.
Wednesday Nov. 18, 1959
- 11 a.m. — the funeral for the four Clutters was held at First Methodist Church, Garden City, and brought more than 1,000 mourners to the service.
- The Hutchinson News offers a $1,000 reward for information on the Clutter killers
- Authorities in Finney County "asked the public for help in solving the bloodiest crime in recent Kansas history."
Wednesday Dec. 30, 1959
- At about 5:25 p.m., Dick Hickock and Perry Smith are arrested in Las Vegas, Nev.
Wednesday Jan. 6, 1960
- About 6 p.m., Hickock and Smith are returned in shackles to the Finney County Jail.
Tuesday, March 22, 1960
- An all male jury was selected from the first 44 candidates in the jury pool.
Wednesday, March 23, 1960
- The trial begins, presided over by Judge Roland Tate. After a trial of several days, the jury deliberated 40 minutes. Both men were found guilty and sentenced to death.
Wednesday, April 14, 1965
- Both men were sent to the gallows. Hickock, 33, died first at 12:41 a.m.; Smith, 36, died at 1:19 a.m.
