Potluck dinner

Potluck dinner

A Presbyterian World Missions special event will take place Monday at The Presbyterian Church, 1719 Texas St. An American and international potluck dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., with a program presented from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The featured speaker will be Bruce Whearty, who grew up in Montana, was raised in the Presbyterian Church and became close to God as Creator through experiences in the outdoors.¬

Resigning from careers as elementary school teachers in Montana, he and his wife, Lora, served as PC(USA) educational mission co-workers in Vanuatu, a little island country in the Southwest Pacific, and in Ethiopia, where they worked with partner churches in mentoring teachers, developing basic literacy programs and promoting education for girls. They were evacuated from mission service overseas in 2009 when one of his heart valves failed. As church support associate for the Midwest, he now serves Presbyterian World Missions by encouraging connections between mission co-workers and congregations.¬

For more information, call Mary Buchele at the church office, 275-9141, or on her cell at 805-2974 or email mary@gcpc.kscoxmail.com.

Father's Day program

The Seventh Day Adventist Church Messiah Group Ministry will present a Father's Day program at 4 p.m. Saturday at Homestead Health Rehabilitation, 2308 N. Third St.

The public is encouraged to attend at no charge.

Growing up without a father

Growing up without a father will be explored at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lifetree Café, 3101 Campus Drive.

A filmed interview with Donald Miller, best-selling author of "Blue Like Jazz" and "Father Fiction," will be screened during the Lifetree program. In the interview, Miller describes growing up without a father and his attempts to reconnect with his father later in life.

"This program, titled 'FatherLess,' is for those who've been abandoned, ignored or abused by their fathers," said Lifetree Café representative Craig Cable. "It's also for dads who have, for some reason, lived away from their children. And it will help anyone who cares about either a father or child who's had to cope with this difficult situation."

Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Snacks and beverages are available.

Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting.
