Frankie Valens visits First Christian Church

Frankie Valens visits First Christian Church

Frankie Valens and his wife Phyllis will be at First Christian Church, 306 N. Seventh St., from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Aug. 3 and during the 10 a.m. worship service.

Frankie was a nightclub singer in the late 1960s and early '70s, touring the United States and Canada. Phyllis is an accomplished concert pianist and has written children's music for Standard Publishing's Vacation Bible School courses for more than 20 years.

The Valens traveled full time in their gospel music ministry for several years, coming off the road in 1997 to assist churches with their music programs.

Frankie is now pastor of First Christian Church in Syracuse.

A fracking forum to be hosted

The facts and fiction about fracking will be considered at a community forum hosted by Lifetree Café, 3101 Campus Drive.

The program, "To Frack or Not to Frack? An Informative Hour of Respectful Conversation," features filmed interviews with both supporters and detractors of fracking.

"The U.S. is on its way to energy independence, thanks to hydraulic fracturing," said Tisha Schuller, president of the Colorado Oil and Gas Association.

"I consider fracking one of the single greatest threats to our health and that of our environment," said fracking activist Shane Davis. "I studied 1,000 spill reports, and 43 percent of them resulted in groundwater contamination."

Community members will also have the opportunity to weigh in with their opinions.

Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Snacks and beverages are available.

Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting.
