'Run For God'

'Run For God'

5K Challenge

First Christian Church in Garden City will act as host for a second session of "Run For God" 5K Challenge beginning July 6. This is a 12-week Bible study and fitness program focusing on building endurance as a runner and developing enduring faith as well.

The instructor will be Ellen Mangan. Plans are to meet each Sunday at 4 p.m. at the church, 306 N. Seventh St.

"Run For God" is a program developed by Mitchell Hollis of Dalton, Ga., in 2010. It started out as a local program and now has more than 1,000 instructors in several countries, sponsoring 5K, 10K and half-marathon races across the nation. The organization states as its primary goal to "spread the good news of Jesus Christ and to educate about the parallels of faith and endurance."

The cost to join the group is $20 to cover the study materials, with a price break offered for families. Returning participants are welcome; cost is $5 for them.

The program is designed for the absolute beginning runner, but all fitness levels and all ages are encouraged to join.

For more information or for details about registering, call the church office at 275-5411. For more details, visit www.runforgod.com.

God coming to aid

Why a caring God would come to the aid of some but not all will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lifetree Café, 3101 Campus Drive.

The program "Does God Play Favorites? Why Would a Caring God Bless Some and Not Others?" features the filmed stories of people affected by a devastating fire.

Some residents describe how their house was "miraculously" spared, while others tell how their lives' possessions were lost in the forest fire.

"After the smoke cleared, residents and firefighters remarked how the fire seemed to surround but stop before devouring some houses," said Lifetree representative Craig Cable. "Disasters like this cause people to question things like divine intervention — or the lack of it."

Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Snacks and beverages are available.

Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting.
