St. Catherine chaplains complete training St. Catherine Hospice Chaplains Gerry Dupuis and Terry Major recently completed 150 hours of training from the internationally recognized Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colo.

Course study included five separate training seminars for each. Dupuis studied "Exploring the Spiritual Dimensions of Death, Grief & Mourning," "Comprehensive Bereavement Skills Training," Exploring the Shadow of the Ghosts of Grief," "Counseling Skills Fundamentals" and "Support Group Facilitator Training."

Major's selected courses of study were "Understanding & Responding to Complicated Mourning," "Exploring the Spiritual Dimensions of Death, Grief & Mourning," "Comprehensive Bereavement Skills Training," "Counseling Skills Fundamentals" and "Support Group Facilitator Training."

The courses were taught by Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D., a noted author, educator and grief counselor. Founded in 1983 by Dr. Wolfelt, the Center for Loss and Life Transition is a private organization dedicated to furthering our understanding of grief.

Dupuis and Majors began their hospice work as volunteer chaplains prior to taking positions as paid hospice staff. Dupuis has served as St. Catherine Hospice chaplain since 2010 and is the pastor at Rose Lane Church of God in Ulysses. He also holds a certification in Thanatology (the study of death). Major became a part-time Hospice chaplain in 2005 and is the pastor at Pierceville Federated Church.

Several other St. Catherine Hospice staff hold a certification in death and grief studies from the Center For Loss and Life Transition. They are Kenne Whitson, Hospice director; Gina Cash, Hospice volunteer and bereavement coordinator; and Pat Pospichal, Hospice bereavement volunteer.

Financial course to be offered

More than two million families have changed their financial future through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, and registration for a course in Garden City is now being taken.

Updated in summer 2012, the now nine-week course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success.

The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Ramsey on DVD, followed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and investing.

FPU will begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at Night Time Medical, 1508 Taylor Plaza East. For more information or to register, call Chris Jones.

Ramsey knows first-hand the pain that financial stress can cause. After creating a net worth of more than $1 million by age 26, he quickly lost it all. Since then, he has helped families and individuals across the country learn how to get control of their finances and avoid debt so they don't have to experience the same pain he did.

FPU lessons also include guest speakers Rachel Cruze, speaker and daughter of Ramsey; Jon Acuff, author of Wall Street Journal best-seller "Quitter" and popular blog "Stuff Christians Like"; and Chris Hogan, counselor and speaker for the Dave Ramsey organization.

After purchasing a membership for the revised FPU, each participant receives a workbook, "Dave Ramsey's Complete Guide to Money," an envelope system and an audio CD library. Participants also will have access to budgeting forms and MP3s of all the lessons. For more information or to purchase a membership, visit www.daveramsey.com.
