Christian movement course coming up

Christian movement course coming up

A "Perspectives on the World Christian Movement" course is coming to Garden City.

The Center for World Missions, in Pasadena, Calif., developed the college-level course on the history of the world Christian movement, from the book of Genesis through the ages of world history to the challenges and opportunities for Christian missions in our modern day.

Dr. John Birky of Lakin and the Rev. Terry Major of Pierceville are coordinating the 15-week class to be held at First Baptist Church, 1005 N. 11th St., starting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

"Perspectives" was developed out of the Urbana Missions Conference in 1973 by Dr. Ralph Winter in Wheaton, Ill. Since its founding at the U.S. Center for World Missions, it has grown into a 15-week study course with classes held in more than 200 cities in the United States, as well as around the world. Many modern missions organizations make this course a requirement in their recruitment and training.

"Perspectives" is endorsed and promoted by well-known pastors and authors such as John Piper and Tony Evans. Each week's class is facilitated by a missionary or missions leader from around Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado or Texas, people who have experience in the field of study and bring real-life illustrations to the topic of that night.

There is a study book and reader that consists of 250 articles and book excerpts from world-missions' leaders past and present. Each participant will learn of God's heart for all peoples from Genesis to Revelation and how the world Christian movement has progressed through the last 2,000 years of human history. They also will see how they can become participants in opportunities to impact the remaining peoples of the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

More information and registration details can be found at or by calling the Rev. Major at (620) 335-0893 or Dr. Birky at 277-8676.

Event to present on overcoming hardship

Practical solutions for overcoming hardship will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lifetree Cafe, 1110 Campus Drive, Suite C.

The program, titled "Overcoming Hardship: A Father and Son Beat the Odds," features an exclusive film of Patrick Henry Hughes and his father. The younger Hughes was born without eyes or the ability to extend his limbs. Though in a wheelchair, Hughes performed in the University of Louisville marching band, his father pushing his wheelchair through every practice and performance.

"I don't think I have anything holding me back," the younger Hughes said. "All I have to do is think about the goal I wish to achieve, look at the resources that might help me achieve that goal, reach out to them and see what happens."

Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Snacks and beverages will be available.

Lifetree Cafe is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting.

Questions about Lifetree may be directed to Mike at 272-6198 or
