Virgil Ellis Gunter, 83, Garden City, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born May 13, 1929, in Craig, Colo., to William Roy and Margaret Alice Richardson Gunter.
On Nov. 23, 1979, he married Josephine Ramos in Syracuse.
After graduating from high school in Alden, Virgil served in the U.S. Army in the late 1940s.
He worked with various cooperatives throughout Kansas before becoming a salesman for Farmland Industries, where he later sold securities.
He moved to Lakin in 1963 and later moved to Garden City in 1978, where he has lived since.
Mr. Gunter was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City, a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus No. 2795 of Garden City, the American Legion, a board member of Catholic Social Services, the Finney County Senior Center, and RSVP where he volunteered at Garden City Community College and for Meals on Wheels.
He enjoyed dancing, playing golf, woodworking, building bird houses and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Craig and wife Anita Gunter of Tulsa, Okla., two daughters, Cherri and husband Jim Parks of Denver, and Cynthia and husband Jim Othrow of Estes Park, Colo.; a brother, Frank Gunter of Estes Park; a sister, Maxine O'Conner of Indio, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Anne Gunter of Denver.
Mr. Gunter was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Virgil Joseph Gunter; four brothers, Marvin Gunter, Russell Gunter, Arlis Gunter and Samuel Roy Gunter; and four sisters Mae Mullane, Minniedale Harrison, Lacassa Fisher and Alice Partington.
Vigil Service and Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
