Five Garden City residents were taken to St. Catherine Hospital for injuries sustained in three separate accidents Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 50.
The first accident occurred at 6:42 a.m. just west of the U.S. 50 junction with Yucca Road. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Clifford Lightcap, 73, Garden City, was eastbound in a 1996 Dodge truck on U.S. 50 when he collided with a stationary vehicle, which then collided with a third stationary vehicle. The two vehicles were stopped at a traffic control point for a previous crash. Lightcap did not realize the vehicles were stopped.
The 2008 Hyundai passenger car that Lightcap collided with was driven by Kayla Vasquez-Irias, 23, Garden City. Vasquez-Irias and passenger Jayden Vasquez, 3 months, Garden City, were confirmed to have been treated and released at St. Catherine hospital. Another passenger of Vasquez-Irias' vehicle, Isak Carrillo, 21, Garden City, was reported by the KHP to have been transported to St. Catherine, but hospital officials said there was no record of him being admitted.
Matthew Selzer, 26, Garden City was the driver of the third car involved in the accident, a 2010 Mazda passenger car. He and his passenger, Adin Stromgren, 22, Garden City, were not injured.
The second accident occurred at 7:11 a.m. one-third mile east of Pole Line Road on U.S. 50. According to the KHP, a 2006 Chevy truck driven by Anthony Briggs, 66, Garden City, lost control on the ice and rolled once before coming to rest on the center median. Briggs was treated and released following the accident.
The third accident occurred at 8:47 a.m. on U.S. 50, one mile east of the junction with Road 21 in Finney County. According to the KHP, a 2001 Honda passenger car driven by Mohamed Abdille, 29, Garden City, also lost control on the ice before entering a ditch and striking a fence.
