It only took about a minute for thousands of neon-colored eggs speckled across the green grass to vanish from sight.
Mother of two Kaysi Gardner strategized with her 4-year-old son, Kanyon, before the start of the Easter egg hunt at Deane Wiley Park's softball fields, where hundreds of kids were gathered itching to make a run for the goods.
"All right, buddy, do you have a plan?" she asked him. "Run and grab as many as you can, OK? But remember you got to be nice; if someone younger than you wants an egg, don't fight with them. You should let them have it."
At the shot of the starting gun, Kanyon and his 2-year old brother, Tyce, scrambled along with hundreds of other kids, clearing the fields dotted with the candy-filled treats filled by volunteers of the Garden City Recreation Commission. The recreation center hosted one of two Easter egg hunts on Good Friday, in spirit of the holiday.
Over at the Mosaic headquarters across town, youngsters were awash with tears and smiles as they opened their treats one by one, hoping to find tickets inside their eggs for special prizes like Easter baskets and toys.
Breanna Nuss found one of 50 prize eggs at Mosaic's Seventh Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The excited strawberry-blonde 10-year-old said she would put the figurine of an Easter bunny she just won on a shelf at home. Nuss and her family and friends drove 60 miles from Jetmore just for the two hunts hosted in Garden City.
"Yeah, we carpooled, two moms and seven kids," said Breanna's mother, Carrie Nuss. "We did it for the kids — it's always for the kids."
More than 2,000 eggs scattered Mosaic's lawns, stuffed and hidden by clients of the nonprofit agency that serves people with developmental disabilities.
Executive Director Debbie Reynolds said the organizers work year-round to make the annual hunt a success for the kids.
"It gives Mosaic's clients an opportunity to give back to the community," Reynolds said.
At both shows, the Easter Bunny — who allegedly hid the eggs — was on hand for pictures and hugs, as parents snapped photos of their little ones.
The egg, signifying the start of life or of rebirth, has become a holiday symbol for Easter and are specially decorated to celebrate the holiday and springtime.
The Garden City Family YMCA, 1224 Center St., is holding its annual Easter Eggstravaganza from 7 to 9 tonight, and the free program includes an Easter egg hunt, games, crafts, inflatables, swimming and snacks.
