The Kansas Silver-Haired Legislature (SHL) will be having its biennial election of county delegates March 10 in 28 counties and is seeking candidates.
Individuals who are interested in becoming an SHL candidate must be 60 or older, a resident in the county in which they are running and a registered Kansas voter.
The SHL is composed of delegates who meet annually to discuss and propose legislative policy through committee hearings and floor debate. Measures that are passed by the SHL are presented to the governor and Kansas Legislature.
Information concerning nomination procedures and necessary filing forms may be obtained from the Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging, a planning and funding agency that provides logistical support to SHL.
Each county should have a silver-haired legislator, and eight counties that have not been represented this past year are Clark, Edwards, Gray, Haskell, Meade, Scott, Stafford and Stevens.
Feb. 11 is the deadline for filing for candidacy. All petitions, filing fees and other nomination papers must be in to the Area Agency on Aging by 4 p.m. that day. The address is SWKAAA, P.O. Box 1636, Dodge City, KS 67801.
If you are interested in becoming a candidate and have questions, contact Executive Director Dave Geist at (800) 742-9531 or at (620) 225-8230.
