Open enrollment for Medicare Part D is coming. The annual period when you can change from one prescription drug plan to another runs from Oct. 15 until Dec. 7. This is also the time period when you can enroll in a prescription drug plan if you did not take advantage of the special enrollment period when you first became eligible for Medicare.

If you are currently enrolled in a prescription drug plan you should be aware of the following timeline.

Between Sept. 16 and 30: 2013 Medicare & You handbook will be mailed to Medicare beneficiaries. You can request an e-version of the handbook through your MyMedicare.gov account or by contacting Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE.

By Sept. 30: All plans must mail their current members the combined ANOC (Annual Notice of Change)/EOC (Evidence of Coverage). These notices tell members about any changes for the 2013 plan year. You should review these notices and make sure your current plan continues to best meet your needs. If you are uncertain, call the senior center at 272-3620 and schedule an appointment to visit with an insurance counselor.

Oct. 1: Prescription drug insurance companies may begin marketing their 2013 plans.

By Oct. 2: Plans that are not renewing their contract for 2013 or whose contract is terminated by CMS for 2013 must send their current members a letter notifying them that their current coverage will end on Dec. 31, 2012.

Oct. 15: Open Enrollment Period begins. People with Medicare can make changes in their Medicare coverage by enrolling in a different Part D plan, changing from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare, or vice versa.

Dec. 7: Open Enrollment Period ends.

Jan. 1, 2013: Effective date of all Open Enrollment-related enrollments and disenrollments.

Jan. 1 to Feb. 14, 2013: Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP). During this time Medicare beneficiaries can disenroll from a Medicare Advantage plan and go to Original Medicare. Note, they cannot use the MADP to switch Medicare Advantage plans. They also get a Part D Special Enrollment Period associated with the MADP to enroll in a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), if they're interested.

For assistance with reviewing your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, call the senior center at 272-3620 for an appointment.
