Beavers rebound on second night of Southwest Classic

SCOTT CITY — It was a good win for the Scott City Beavers, a 67-51 victory over Wichita Trinity in a game they dominated from the start.

The Beavers went on a 13-5 run to close out the opening quarter of game two of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic.

In the second, they scored on 13 of their 15 possessions.

The Beavers shot a torrid 61 percent from the field in the first half and grabbed 16 rebounds, going up 40-19 at the break.

In contrast, the Knights shot just 8 of 20 with just five boards.

Trey O'Neil scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in the opening half, giving him 45 points thus far in the Classic.

Brett Meyer added 14.

It was a far cry from Scott City's opening game 69-51 loss to Pueblo East on Thursday.

Call it more of a contrast, coach Glenn O'Neil said.

"Today after school we got into the TV room, watched things from last night we didn't do very well," he said, like moving the ball, setting better screens and trapping the dribble.

"It's a great teaching tool. The guys bought into it and made us look respectable," O'Neil said.

Pueblo East made the Beavers look bad on Thursday, he said, but Friday the Beavers bounced back and showed some pride.

All seven varsity players who dressed scored, and looking to get the ball to people to score is always their goal, O'Neil said.

"We want guys to share the wealth and make them tough to guard. Trey had some good passes and played well," he said. "Sloan (Baker, who scored eight) played better and more physical in the post. Brett Meyer is a good offensive player, too. We're not looking for one guy to score 25. We want to be balanced. One guy's not tough to guard. Five guys are."

The first half went about as well Friday night as it did for Pueblo the night before, O'Neil said.

"We just played better. That's what we're hoping for," he said.

Alex Carro led the Knights with 11 points, and Preston Miller added 10.

Trinity was 20 of 42 from the floor (48 percent), but only 4 of 15 from behind the arc. They also had only 15 rebounds.

Scott City (1-1) will face Denver South at approximately 6 p.m. today to close out the Classic. Wichita Trinity will travel to Holcomb.

The Lady Beavers dug too big a hole in the first half to mount a comeback against Wichita Trinity Friday night as they fell 50-38 in the second night of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic.

But they played well enough in the second half to take some positives, outscoring Trinity 26-20 in that time frame.

Trinity led 19-5 after the first quarter, holding the Beavers to just a field goal and three free throws.

Then Trinity went on a 16-3 run over the final 6:05 to take a 30-10 halftime lead.

Scott City's Bailey Nickel took over in the second half, scoring 20 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, including 11 in the third period.

Nicole Latta added 10 for the Beavers. But neither way enough as Shiloh Miller had 17 to lead the Lady Knights.

Scott City (0-2) shot 16 of 31 from the field for the game, but they were just 2 of 21 in the first half.

Scott City committed 36 turnovers to Trinity's 26.

Trinity, which scored just 24 points against Garden City on Thursday night, got its first win of the season, while Scott City fell to 0-2.

Scott City faces Denver South at 4 p.m. today.
