SATANTA — Kids whirled on carnival rides, families picked out their favorite creations at the craft fair and adults looked at their favorite classics in the car show Saturday at the annual Satanta Days celebration.
The event is held every year during the second weekend of May to bring the community together for events such as a barbecue, parade, street dance, carnival, craft fair and children's games in the park, said Brent Howie, Satanta Chamber of Commerce president.
But his favorite event was the car show. Howie, along with others, spent time Saturday afternoon at the Car Show and Shine. About 20 cars were lined up in the Methodist Park in Satanta for viewing.
Steve Chaloupek, Liberal, and his wife, Kimberly, showed off their 1957 Chevy that Steve spent six years restoring.
The car itself is original, he said, and has a modern drive train and transmission system. The aquamarine color on the outside also was on the inside on the leather seats.
The car also has an original interior and electric windows.
Steve Chaloupek said restoring classic cars is a hobby he enjoys because it's a time to bond with family members. And, he said, he gets to restore cars in his adult life that he wanted when he was younger.
"This is my high school dream," Chaloupek said. "A few years later, we finally accomplished that."
Steve and Kimberly Chaloupek spent time on Saturday afternoon visiting with Satanta residents and talking about their family that lives in the area.
Across the street from the car show, Stephanie Frank, Linda Nelson and Mindy Howe, all of Satanta, were busy dishing up cherry and rainbow snow cones to children and adults.
At 2 p.m. Saturday they'd served 60 snow cones to raise money for Relay for Life. Frank, Nelson and Howe said the children's favorite part of Satanta Days is the parade, while their favorite part was the craft show.
Seth Colson and Riley Frank, 9, took a break from the activities to sit down for a snow cone. Colson said his favorite part was the carnival because of the lights, and Frank said he liked the car show.
"It's just interesting to look at the different cars," Frank said.
