Maria Ramirez to celebrate 80th
Maria "Lena" Ramirez of Garden City will have her 80th birthday Sept. 11.
A card shower is planned, with friends and family invited to bring cards to a come-and-go reception from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 12 at her home, 2117 Tara Drive in Garden City. Cards also may be mailed to Maria at that address.
Maria has resided in the Garden City area for about 42 years.
Oscar Rector to celebrate 99th
Oscar Rector of Syracuse will celebrate his 99th birthday on Sept. 10. Friends and family are invited to wish him well with a card. They may be sent to Oscar at Box 627, Syracuse, KS 67878.
Arleta Humbolt to celebrate 80th
Arleta Humbolt of Garden City will celebrate her 80th birthday on Sunday. Friends and family are invited to a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in Fellowship Hall of Church of the Nazarene, 2720 N. Campus Drive.

Senior Center bridge
Betty Nally won high in Friday's session of Senior Center bridge at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Second place went to Wauneta Messenger. Monica Reilley took third.
In the three tables played Monday, Evelyn Dunlap won high, Virginia Enslow was second, and Betty Harsh took third.

Rotary Club
Beverly Schmitz-Glass, Ph.D., from the Garden City Downtown Vision group, was the speaker at the Aug. 25 meeting of the Rotary Club. Members heard about the upcoming additions and changes in downtown Garden City and some of the programs, grants and business mentoring that are available through the Vision group.
At the Aug. 18 meeting, the speaker was Beverly Miller, president of the Habitat for Humanity Board. She spoke about the process of application for a home and the actual building process. Volunteers are always needed for construction and support processes. Anyone can participate even without prior construction experience. Contact Miller if you wish to volunteer.
Featured speakers at the Aug. 11 meeting were Vanessa Roseus and Vinaeta Lugo from the Garden City High School Interact Club, a leadership club sponsored by Rotary. Their presentation was about the learning experience they participated in at the Rotary Summer Leadership Camp. Contact Shawna Whitehurst, the Rotary Club chairman for Interact, for more information.
Senior Center double pinochle
Charlotte Kimsey won high in the three tables of Senior Center double pinochle played Monday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Peggy Phipps took second place. Third went to Maybelle Bowen.

Phyllis Loper won high in the three tables of Senior Center pitch played Tuesday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Second place went to Wally Unruh. Mary Joseph took third.
Finney County 4-H'ers place at state events
Finney County 4-H members traveled to Manhattan to participate in the State 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes on Aug. 21 and 22. Sweepstakes events included livestock judging, meats judging, skillathon and Quiz Bowl.
Finney County placed first in quiz bowl, easily winning each of their rounds by at least 90 points. Quiz bowl team members included Kendal Clawson, Kurtis Clawson, Kyle Deaver and Katy Clawson.
Livestock Judging team members included Kyle Deaver, Jonathan Lock, Sara Bilberry and Katy Clawson. They judged eight classes and gave four sets of reasons. Katy Clawson placed eighth in beef judging.
Judging on the meats team were Kyle Deaver, Sara Bilberry, Jonathan Lock, Kurtis Clawson and Katy Clawson. The team placed second overall in reasons. Kurtis Clawson was ninth individual and Katy Clawson placed 13th. In reasons, Kurtis placed fifth and Katy placed seventh.
Skillathon team members included Kyle Deaver, Sara Bilberry, Katy Clawson, Kurtis Clawson and Jonathan Lock. They identified livestock equipment, livestock breeds, retail meat cut identification, judged a hay class, took a written exam and participated in a team quality assurance exercise. As a team, they also selected gilts in a keep/cull class. They placed 10th overall.
Team members belong to the Wide Awake 4-H Club.
