Stephens to celebrate 85th

The children of Irv Stephens, formerly of Garden City, invite friends to join them in honoring their father on his 85th birthday Oct. 10 by sending a card or note.

Senior center pitch

Maybelle Bowen won high in the two tables of senior center pitch played Tuesday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Second place went to Brenda Myers. Juanita Crotty took third.

Beech receives Extension award

Linda Beech, Ellis County Extension agent for family and consumer sciences, was honored at the National Extension Galaxy Conference held Sept. 15 to 20 in Pittsburgh. She received the second-place national Television Communications Award from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences for a TV spot which aired on "Extras From Extension" on Eagle Community TV.

In receiving the award, Beech was recognized for her educational message encouraging viewers in more than 10,000 households in a three-county region to take advantage of seasonal sale prices on healthy holiday foods. The award recognizes excellence in an educational or promotional feature in a regular broadcast or a special program.

Beech joined the Ellis County Extension staff in January 2012, after having served as an Extension agent in Finney, Stevens and Hodgeman counties. She has 34 years of service as an Extension community educator with Kansas State Research and Extension, specializing in nutrition, food safety and financial management programs.

Duplicate bridge

The Garden City Duplicate Bridge Club played a 25-board Howell movement Monday, with three tables filled. Suit games outpaced no-trump 11 to 9 and two slams succeeded. Pat Barber and Faye Anderson tied with Wen Wurst and Jon Craig for first place, each posting 57 percent games.

Regular games begin at 7 p.m. Monday, 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St., with all bridge players welcome. For partners, call Jon Kempton at 276-2876.

Carol Bradford won high in the three tables of senior center double pinochle played Monday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Donna Preston took second place. Third went to Neva Maxfield.
