MARIENTHAL — Robert Frederick Berning, 66, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti following a three-and-a-half year battle with pancreatic cancer.Mr. Berning was born Sept. 27, 1945, at the Berning family homestead near Marienthal, to Anthony John and Hilda Laura Simons Berning. A 1963 graduate of Wichita County High School, he was a farmer and a lifetime resident of Marienthal.
He had served in the United States Army Reserves from 1964 through 1970.
The things he loved most were his children, grandchildren, his dogs, farming, fishing and hunting.
Mr. Berning was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and St. Mary Parish Council, all in Marienthal. He served on the Wichita County School Board, Wichita County Soil Conservation Board, was a former 4-H leader and Little League coach.
On June 10, 1967, he married Roxanna McIntyre at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Rod and Jill Berning of Modoc, Robbie and Brecken Berning of Leoti, Renissa and Darren Riley of Augusta, and Ryan and Melissa Berning of Augusta; nine grandchildren, Shaelee Berning of Modoc, Chandler Berning of Modoc, Laura and Rem Dyas of Hillsboro, Ill., Tate Berning of Leoti, Kyler Berning of Leoti and Nolan Riley, Camrea Riley, Tenley Berning and Talen Berning, all of Augusta; one great-grandson, Gavin Reid Dyas of Hillsboro, Ill.,; two brothers, Eugene Berning of Leoti and Edmund Berning of Marienthal, two sisters, Joan Jesko of Hereford, Texas and Virginia Knobbe of Marienthal; a loyal dog, Rowdy; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Berning; a sister, Mary Louise Simon; and one grandson, Anthony Chase Berning.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with Father Benjamin Martin officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Marienthal with Military Honors provided by the United States Army Funeral Detail, Fort Riley.
Visitation is from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary Catholic Church or the Robert F. Berning Memorial Fund to be divided among several different charities.
